Overview
Virtual Gridiron was the first virtual reality sports game that allowed two fans to go head-to-head against each other in real time.  We built it for the 2017 Super Bowl in Houston, and more than 5,000 fans played Virtual Gridiron.

Goals
Demonstrate the draw of a VR sports game that allowed fans to compete one-on-one with themselves and with pro football stars, including Drew Bree’s, Odell Beckham Jr, and others.

Solution

  • Immersive, multiplayer experience.
  • Included live 360 footage of actual or former NFL players in uniforms running plays on the Arizona Cardinals official NFL stadium.
  • First instance of a multiplayer VR experience that included live capture of football players in 360 video from wire cams above.

Results

  • Live-streams of NFL stars playing and social coverage generated over 140,000 views and 3.6 million impressions.
  • Among the most popular exhibits at the Super Bowl with more than 5,000 fans participating.
  • Won two Clio Awards for game innovations: Silver and Bronze.

“As a fan, every time I played Virtual Gridiron I got goosebumps. It’s an experience that is worlds above what most people are used to seeing.”
